Beachcomber
Northern Michigan has many, many different types of beaches to choose from. From the perfect, soft sand of Lake Michigan, to the shallows of some of our inland lakes, you’ll want to stay all day.
The beach at the Petoskey State Park is perfect for everyone in your family. There are sandy dunes, including “Old Baldy” for the kids to climb. The soft sands near the water offer the perfect grounds for hunting the elusive Petoskey Stone. And the quiet edges of the beach are the perfect place to nestle in with a good book and watch the water lap against the shore. They have wonderful facilities and a great playground, as well as pavilions complete with grills ready to use.
Camp Pet-O-Sega is located on the eastern tip of Pickeral Lake, north of Petoskey. This camping and swimming park is run by Emmet County. Their beach area is very family-friendly and offers lots of space to run around.
The Village of Walloon Lake has a wonderful little community beach right in the center of the village. It has a small sandy beach and a wide expanse of grassy area for you to place your blankets and towels. The water is very shallow and clear for quite a distance, which makes this great swimming for small children. Across M75, they have a small playground and pavilion. You can also take advantage of the cool water flowing down the river to do a little fishing.
Some other beaches to check out – Fishermans’ Island State Park south of Charlevoix, Young State Park in Boyne City, Zoll Street Beach and the Municipal Beach in Harbor Springs. All of these beaches are sandy and offer great access to Lake Michigan or Lake Charlevoix. Let the Petoskey Stone hunting begin!
