This is the story of the Anishinaabek, the “True People” of the Ojibwe of the Upper Great Lakes, with unforgettable characters and extensive research into the lives of the early Native Americans.
A former newspaper editor, Downes co-founded the alternative newsweekly, Northern Express, in Traverse City in 1991.  He and his wife Jeannette have two adult children and seven grandchildren. The couple make their winter home in Mexico and Central America. Windigo Moon is his first novel.
