Painting the human being, standing before an inspiring subject, is the ultimate opportunity for me as an artist. The portrait is composed of everything under the sun; shape, form, color, light, energy. It offers endless challenges, not just in the technical sense, but also emotionally and personally. The stakes feel high when I am painting a person - it's vital for me to capture some truth about them; their physical likeness; a sense of their spirit.
The live portrait sitting is where the big magic happens. Ideas and conversations flow, hearts are open, "selves" are revealed. It is such a privilege. I see the subject and they see me.
