Charlevoix Chamber of Commerce
Gary Puckett of Union Gap fame takes the stage at Crooked Tree Arts Center in Petoskey, Michigan on Monday, July 21 at 8:00 pm. This performance is the only date Puckett and his band will play in Michigan.
In 1967, Puckett formed the Union Gap Band in San Diego in and was quickly signed by Columbia Records. Later that year, the band had their first hit, "Woman, Woman," written by Jim Glaser and Jimmy Payne. The band continued on a fast track with Followed by They hit it big, garnering the number four spot on Billboard Hot 100. The next two years brought even more acclaim, with "Young Girl" and "Lady Willpower," both hitting number two, and "Over You" and "Don't Give In To Him" at number fifteen.
Gary's trademark rich tenor voice was one of the most familiar sounds on radio in the 1960s, and he is still one of the most frequently requested singers.
Although the band never had a #1 record in the United States, "Young Girl" made it to # 1 on the UK singles chart. For the time, the song was controversial, telling the tale of a man resisting the charms of a young woman. Dramatically delivered by Puckett, and featuring memorable strings and brass arrangements, the song was an instant classic.
It should be noted as well that many of Puckett's hits were linked by a common theme of femals empowerment and this may well be the reason for Puckett's success in the past forty years. On the other hand, he has certainly hung on to his good looks.
Although the Union Gap was disbanded in 1971, Puckett has had his share of accomplishments as a solo artist. The group's hits continue to sell today, especially as part of 1960s hits compilations.
Special ticket pricing is available for those interested in meeting Gary at a private reception following the show, Gold $68; Patron Seating is $50/person; Crooked Tree Arts Center members, $30; and Non-members, $35. All seats are reserved.
