The Petoskey Film Theater continues its Movies-in-the-Park series with the animated Disney film "Meet the Robinsons" on Friday, July 25, 9:30 pm at Pennsylvania Park (across from the Perry Hotel), Petoskey. Donations are appreciated. For information on upcoming films call the PFT Movie Hotline at 758-3108. Bring your blankets and lawnchairs and have a fun-filled movie night out under the stars.
"Meet the Robinsons" is a visually impressive children's animated film marked by a story of considerable depth. Based on William Joyce's beautifully illustrated children's book "A Day with Wilbur Robinson", this lively computer-animated Disney film follows the adventures of Lewis (voiced by Jordan Fry and Daniel Hansen), a young orphaned inventor who is determined to find his birth mother by using a "memory scanner," a device of his own creation. When Lewis meets a boy from the year 2037 named Wilbur Robinson (Wesley Singerman), they begin a charmingly strang time-traveling journey that involves Wilbur's eccentric family, bowler hats bent on world domination, song-and-dance frogs, and a frustrated Tyrannosaurus Rex. Boasting the debut of cutting-edge 3D technology, "Meet the Robinsons" is directed by first-time feature-film director Stephen J. Anderson, who also voices numerous characters, including the mustachioed villian, Bowler Hat Guy. (Other notable vocal actors include Angela Bassett, Tom Selleck, Adam West, Harland Williams, and Laurie Metcalf). ROBINSONS also marks Pixar head John Lasseter's first outing as an executive producer on a non-Pixar movie, resulting in a film that features some of that company's signature energy and wit, but stands on its own outside of that universe. While ROBINSONS' literally all-over-the-place plot can be a little difficult to follow at times, its stunning retro-futuristic visuals and amiably wacky characters easily keep viewers entertained.

Earthworks Music and Fox on a Hill Productions Present:
Laura Bates
Laura Bates and Brandon Foote's sound is timeless, rootsy and lush, with soaring harmonies, piano, mandolin and guitars harkening back to the olden days with new vision. Bates and Foote look and sound like they just stepped off the stage of the Grand Ole Opry, or perhaps even further back, to the dance halls of the civil war era - always digging deeper and moving forward
With their unique blend of old-time, folk, bluegrass and country, Laura Bates and Brandon Foote have graced coffee shops, bookstores, pubs, and festivals with tradition favorites and original songs. Booking their act as "Guitar, Mandolin, and Two Voices", their sound is refreshingly simple and strives for authenticity, with nods to the Carter Family, the Monroe Brothers, and Tim and Mollie O'Brien.
Their debut album, Jubilee was released in April 2007 on Earthwork Music showcasing a handful of fine microphones and a cast of talented friends. With reflective and poignant songwriting, Jubilee presents gospel tinged Mighigan roots at its best.
In this day of overproduced, synthetic music, it is albums like Jubilee that refresh and fill our plates with the honest simplicity of a Sunday morning.
