Office: Festivals/Fairs/Parades
(Fri. )
6 pm to 9 pm
Location: Downtown Petoskey

Petoskey Rocks! Is a brand new summertime event designed to make Friday nights in Downtown Petoskey fun for everyone.   Here is an update on some of our latest creations and preparations.

Above you see our brand new logo designed by graphic artist and Native American flute player Aaron Wayne Otto.  The committee selected Aaron's design from all those entered in our logo design competition.  Thanks to Aaron and all who entered.  Aaron's logo will be used as a part of the unifying theme for this summer's new nine week Friday night Downtown Petoskey entertainment  and excitement extravaganza.

The logo is centered by our state stone and our most identifiable local gem and icon, the Petoskey Stone.  The stone is shaped like a guitar pick to symbolize the music of local artists that will make up a core element of the Petoskey Rocks! series of events.  The logo also includes the familiar gaslight emblematic of  historic Downtown Petoskey.

The weekly schedule of Rockin' main events is also coming into sharper focus as summertime nears.  At the moment the schedule looks something like this:

June 22 – Rock! the Promenade – An evening of Petoskey style!  We will focus on fashion and design with live window models, design demonstrations, walking models.

June 29 – Rock your Community –  Stores will host local non-profit and community organizations which will explain and demonstrate their individual missions and the contributions they make to our entire community

July 6 – Artists Rock! – Stores will host artists from the Petoskey area  who will explain and demonstrate their talents, artwork and methods (and the deep, dark secrets of their creations) so you can get to know these cultural leaders of our town.

July 13 – Microbrew Tasting – Petoskey bars and restaurants will present their favorite local microbrews that add  to our local hometown flavor and entertainment. This event will also include additional activities for the entire family.

July 20 – Rockin’! Trunk Show -- Merchants from throughout Downtown Petoskey are bringing their best major suppliers to our town all on the same night so they can show off their latest products that help make Downtown Petoskey one of America's best places to shop (and window shop).

July 27 – Winetasting – Downtown Petoskey's best and most entertaining restaurants and wine shops will be offering samples of their most fascinating and unusual wines.  This event will also include additional activities for the entire family.

Aug 3 - Rock the Past – Come Downtown and learn about our history.  Take an historic tour and learn about the past lives of our historic buildings.

Aug 10 – Rock! the Future – This week Downtown celebrates the talent and energy of our youth.  The evening will include performances and demonstrations of all sorts.

Aug 17 – Car Show – We have been tracking down the car clubs and individuals with most unusual and fascinating automobiles from all around this car crazy state and beyond.  Expect a collection of vehicles especially selected to please the unique tastes and interests of Petoskey's local residents and summer visitors.

Petoskey Rocks!  will feature a community movie in the park at the end of each Friday evening and music on the streets every single week.    Some nights there will be  horse drawn carriage rides.

5th Annual "Stuff the Bus"
August 17th - 18th, 2012
Office: Fundraiser/Volunteer Opportunity
Location: K-Mart - Petoskey/Charlevoix ServPro - Gaylord/Cheboygan
Two local United Ways will host the 5th Annual ‘Stuff the Bus’ event on Saturday, Aug. 18, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Char-Em United Way will have a school bus at each of the K-Mart Plazas in Petoskey and Charlevoix and Otsego United Way, who is teaming up with ServPro of Gaylord & Cheboygan, will have buses at K-Mart, Wal-Mart, and Glen’s in Gaylord. Cheboygan United Way will also be holding a “Stuff the Bus” event at the K-Mart Plaza in Cheboygan on Friday, August 17.

Extra expenses for school are difficult for many families due to the current economy. Area United Ways are asking our communities to collect and donate school supplies for our local children. “We want to make sure that every child has the supplies they need to succeed in school,” said Lisa Luebke of Char-Em United Way. “Cuts in school budgets and the struggling economy have left many local kids and schools in need of the basics like crayons, pencils, paper and scissors.”

To make it easy for people to give, select businesses throughout Charlevoix, Emmet, Otsego and Cheboygan Counties will have drop-boxes available from August 1st through the 20th.  As an extra incentive, Char-Em United Way will have a raffle drawing for those dropping off donations. The grand prize will be two tickets to Avalanche Bay Indoor Waterpark (one prize for Petoskey K-Mart and one for Charlevoix K-Mart locations.)

Shoppers can get a list of suggested school supplies and drop box locations by going to United Way’s website at www.charemunitedway.org or www.otsegounitedway.org. The distribution of school supplies to students in need will be coordinated with each United Way’s local school districts.

Char-Em United Way is also excited to launch their participation in the nationally acclaimed, Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library as part of their Education Initiative. Information on the program and registration will be available at Petoskey and Charlevoix K-Mart locations during Stuff the Bus.

To volunteer for the event, contact Casey or Lisa at 487-1006 or info@charemunitedway.org in Char-Em or Carol at 989-705-8584 in Otsego County.

Each United Way is also accepting monetary donations to purchase school supplies for students in need. Donations should be mailed to Char-Em United Way, PO Box 1701, Petoskey, MI 49770, or Otsego County United Way, 116 E. Fifth St., Gaylord, MI 49735 with Stuff the Bus noted, or use one of the donation boxes available at each event
