The 2nd annual celebration of young Ernie Hemingway's summer life in our region will take place on Sunday, August 25th, in "downtown" Horton Bay.
A social hour at the General Store begins the celebration at 5 p.m. Included is a cash bar, music, and readings from Hemingway's short stories that highlight some of his adventures in Horton Bay as a teenager.
A free screening of the new documentary on young Hemingway will follow in the First Methodist Church at 7 p.m. Ice cream at the General Store will follow the screening and conclude the celebration.
Admission to the social hour is $5 and reservations are required; call George Colburn at 231.535.2440 or email gac@starbrightmc.com. A reservation for both the pre-screening party and a DVD of the documentary film is $15.
Participating in the celebration are the two major businesses in Horton Bay, the General Store and the Red Fox Inn bookstore, operated by Chip Loringer and Mary Lynn Hartwell respectively. Joining with them to make it a fun evening for everyone are singer-songwriter Robin Lee Berry, Georganna Monk of the Charlevoix County Historical Preservation Society, Pastor Mike Neilhardt of the United Methodist Church, filmmaker George Colburn and G.T. Long, a published author and the infamous "fat lady" of Horton Bay's annual 4th of July parade.
The event in Horton Bay was organized last August following the birthday dedication in July of a statue of young Ernie Hemingway in downtown Petoskey's Pennsylvania Park. Sculptor Andy Sacksteder will be a featured guest in Horton Bay, signing photos of his work.
