The Michigan Humanities Council (MHC) has named Raven Hill Discovery Center as one of six sites for the Water|Ways statewide exhibit tour for 2018-19.  The Council will partner with Raven Hill to present the Smithsonian Museum on Main Street Water|Ways exhibit at the Center from August 11 to September 23 of 2018.
A variety of water-related programs will be presented by Raven Hill and local organizations over the course of the six-week exhibit both at Raven Hill and at other sites in the community. This Smithsonian Water|Ways in Michigan Exhibit is a chance to highlight for the community-at-large the importance of northern Michigan’s water as a natural resource to be treasured, as well as water’s historical and cultural importance in this area.
“Water|Ways is a unique exhibit that explores the essential role that water plays in our environment and society. Throughout the globe, water holds extensive cultural value as a symbol of power and force, grace and fluidity, and healing and cleansing. Water is also a natural resource that has dictated migration patterns, affected economic prosperity, and shaped communities throughout time, and continues to be one of Earth’s most defining resources. Here in Michigan, the value of water as both a human resource and a cultural symbol is both understood and treasured.”
Raven Hill Discovery Center is a one of a kind museum, connecting science, history and art for all ages. As a local resource and also a tourist destination, Raven Hill draws regularly from a twelve county area in northern Lower Michigan during the school year and from across Michigan, the United States and the world during the summer.
